The ELLEgirl.com interns dedicate the daytime hours they could be on their Tumblrs to imparting as much wisdom as they can about the latest and greatest in style and beauty trends, but sometimes it’s the real-life experiences that teach us the most. So as a new crop of high school seniors prepares for the next great adventure—college—the EG interns take the lessons learned from their own college experiences and dedicate the following posts to you, the incoming freshman. You might want to take some notes.
Dear Freshman,
Get ready for it—here begins a new chapter where every conversation from now on will contain certain questions. Friends, strangers, and family alike will want to know: What’s your major? What classes are you taking? What do you want to be?
Did I scare you? Well, I didn’t mean to, I promise! I don’t have any older brothers or sisters, so I had no one telling me to just breathe and relax. So, here I am, as your older sister by proxy I am telling you that although these questions do initially make one quiver like a dog with its tail between its legs, don’t sweat it. It is OK if your answer is I don’t know yet!

Dear Freshmen,
I hope you packed your Thanksgiving pants in that luggage (yes, the ones with the stretchy waist), because you’re in for a HUGE freshman year treat—HUGE.
To your left is me hiking up my wardrobe to grab a packet of Ramen. (I keep it up there so that I DON’T end up doing this…clearly a fail.) That was my late night snack at 3 a.m., of which I ate during my study break while watching Dexter on Netflix (Dear Freshman… Love, Procrastinator is a post for another day).
Considering the fact you have a meal plan that costs you anywhere from $2,000 to $4,000—per a semester—you’re going to want to eat your money’s worth. And then you will get hit with what us college kids call “Finals Week” a.k.a. “Hell Week.” You will struggle. There will be bruises. There will be tears. And you’re going to want to run into a wall (or the floor so you can sleep on it). But you’ll survive.
Those long nights you stay up studying for that Art History exam whilst writing your 10-page English paper will make that Hot Pocket seem so easy to reach. But stay away from Easy Mac, Cup Noodle, and anything else microwavable, especially if it has MSG. At least, not as an everyday meal. It’s a bad habit to build. [Read more...]

Dear Freshmen,
As you enter into this new and exciting chapter in your life, you’ll be faced with many decisions and obstacles in the road. You’ll learn tons of new things about yourself, and many important lessons along the way. And you’ll learn these things through trial and error. Unfortunately for some of us (myself included), it takes a lot of messing up to finally get things right.
Take me for example, as I decided to attend one of the biggest party schools in the country: Indiana University. As an incoming freshman, I definitely felt the pressure to live up to the school’s reputation. And as a girl who’s had a hard time saying “no”, I definitely learned that my not-so-wise decisions had consequences—and fast.
Not only did going out every night affect my short-term ability to stay focused (nobody is an attentive student after a night out partying till 3 a.m.), but I also saw my partying habits starting to affect my GPA…like when I would sleep in and miss my 8 a.m. lectures. [Read more...]

Dear Freshmen,
Welcome to college. Prepare for confusion and chaos, especially with boys. At least that was my problem—but it didn’t start out that way.
I came into college with a steady boyfriend of nearly two years, expecting to enjoy my first year by having fun but studying hard. Well, my boyfriend had decided to go to a community college away from my school for the first couple years, which we both thought would be fine. Turns out we missed each other more than thought humanly possible, so he transferred to my school his second semester in.
Cool Job: The Girl Behind the Punchline
Caprice Crane might not be the most followed author on Twitter, but she could just be the funniest. Her tweets say what we wish we could say but don’t, or what we simply never thought of. Like her shout-out to all the mis-styled fellas out there: “Hey, men in sandals: Nope.” We couldn’t have said it better!
Her latest hilarious venture is much longer then a short 140-character tweet. It’s a gut-busting, try-not-to-laugh-out-loud-and-embarrass-yourself-in-public novel about a superstitious DJ who falls in love but is convinced the relationship is doomed from the start. In fact, she announced the release of the novel, With a Little Luck, to her followers in a way only she could: “My new tweet is out today and it’s only 441,285 characters! (Some might call it a book.)” [Read the interview...]
Besides deciding what school you want to go to, choosing your major just might be the biggest college-related decision you have to make. After the tedium of high school, colleges offer endless possibilities, and you can focus your studies on exactly what you want to study: Business, Engineering, Art History, Foreign Language, Marine Science, and Journalism are some of the options that are commonly offered.
Some schools, however, might offer too many possibilities. Check out the oddest, most bizarre majors that are offered in universities throughout our country:
This highly prestigious Pittsburgh school is well-known for the sciences and maths, but who knew you could also spend your time learning to be the bagpiper you can be. We wonder if kilt-making is one of the required courses?
It’s hard not to imagine these classes being filled with snickering, giggling boys. Plus, if you ever told people “I majored in Sexuality Studies,” we’re pretty sure they’d think it was a cheesy pick-up line and make a quick exit. [Read more...]
